ROADTRIP OF A LIFETIME

IMG_2957

This post is dedicated to the last month of adventuring in the United States. Long story short, me and six other guys were blessed to be sponsored by Liberty University to lead worship at various churches and to go camping and hiking around the west coast. We got a bus, and we got our gas and lodging paid for, for a month of free traveling. We agreed to document our stops and experiences. We went to 25 different states and stayed in 19 beautiful locations from June 5th to July 3rd. My best friend Timothy Riordan captured a portion of these places and poetically adds to them. He is a fantastic writer. He put a lot of time into each picture and description. It was well worth the effort to be able to share some of our memories.

Everything below is credited as Timothy Riordan’s work. You can also follow him at http://timriordanmusic.wordpress.com

Officially sponsored by Cardinal Camera. Thanks to these guys, we have the cameras, lenses, tripods, GoPros etc. to capture our journey! Be ready for some footage.

Creation.
Creation.
And we're off! The year long dream has just become... a reality. I'll never forget the moment Colin Mukri and I (Timothy) birthed this dream in the car on the way to Charlottesville, Va. We immediately called 5 of our best friends (ones we knew we could spend a month with)... They all said, "of course we're comin!"... And here we are. Off on a life changing trip. Truly surreal. Next stop: Grand Canyon. God is good.

Officially sponsored by Liberty University. This bus is our home for the next month. Thank you @libertyuniversity. This vehicle will carry us along the roads that we have planned for the past year. It will take us to glaciers, valleys, rivers, towering cliffs, churches, and to new faces and friends we have yet to encounter. Pray for us. As we hike and explore the west, we carry the name of Christ.

Somehow this small pantry was left after the powerful winds took the rest of the home.

Oklahoma pt 1 As we drove through the city of Moore, we were quickly hushed. The site of the demolished homes brought tears to my eyes. I imagined what life would be like if this was my reality. My home. My family. I couldn't. It hurt too bad to try. As we left, we said a prayer for the families. Please continue to pray for Oklahoma. ‎#roalt2013

Oklahoma pt. 3 As We stood on the center of a concrete slab, where a home once stood, we found a book of prayers. This was the page it was opened to: "Thank you, Father, that in every situation You are there to protect me. The earth, and everything on it are under your command. You are my heavenly Father. Through my faith in You, I have the power to tread on serpents and have all power over the enemy. Father, I give you the glory in this situation. Your mercy is upon me and my family, and You will keep me safe. Thank you, Father, for your guidance and safety-You are worthy of all praise. Amen!"

Grand Canyon pt. 1 We have arrived. We have never experienced anything like this. As we looked out across the vast canyon, the colors of the rock and sunset displayed the majesty of our Creator. Creation is constantly praising Him. It's such a beautiful reality. I wish I could explain to you the BIGGNESS and beauty of this place. You just need to come. By the way, this view is about 200 feet from our campsite.

So we hiked our first trail yesterday! South Kaibab trail. If you look to the left, thats the ROALT crew heading down the mountain (minus me). It was unbelievable. The whole trail was a view. We also encountered our first elk and the endangered California Condor. What a day.

And THIS is what we hiked to. After watching the sunset down in the canyon, it was quite the experience hiking back up in the dark. No sign of the modern world. Only the bugle of elk echoing in the open canyon to accompany us. It was like a dream.

Ladies and gents. Let me introduce you to the Zion Narrows. The glory of God is so beautifully displayed in this colorful paradise. This hike was roughly 8 miles. Most of the hike was in knee to chest deep water. Just incredible. ‎#roalt2013 ‎#adventure

On our way to Mystery Falls in The Narrows at Zion National Park. There really are no words to describe our day here. The canyon walls would constantly change from deep oranges, to black, and then to beaming yellows. The brisk water continued to be a deep blue. Beautiful.

#meettheroaltcrew pt.1 Phil Godley. Wow. Where do I start? Phil is a jack of all trades and a man of many passions. A middle child who likes attention, but he's hilarious, so we gladly give it to him. He's a tinkerer, dabbling in areas that range from small engine repair on his moped to stringing up his own fly-fishing lures to wiring electric guitar pedals. A gunslinger of hobbies. Phil's a fantastic musician and singer, hunter, our resident coffee expert, and an irreplaceable facet to the ROALT crew. However, aside from the many mentioned attributes of Phillip Andrew Godley, most importantly, he is a follower of Christ. He loves the Lord with every ounce of his being. We all love reading his journal to see his genuine passion for the beauty of God's character and the Gospel. We are all Phil fans.

Let me introduce you to Angel's Landing. This hike is about 6 miles. Which sounds easy... But when you are literally pulling yourself up a canyon mountain, with a 1,400 ft drop off, 4 ft to the left and 4 ft to the right of you... it can be pretty intense! The view was indescribable. You can see it in the previous picture. Btw, that's Jonathan. He is beasting the mountain with a broken hand. Props. ‎#roalt2013

These mighty mountains were sculpted by the hands of the King; the mighty King of heaven. We praise You, Father of glory. Awaken our hearts to see the riches of Your vast love. — with Keller Hopkins II.

On Monday, we led worship at Grace City Church in Vegas. This church is on fire, is focused, and is preparing for revival. We thought we scheduled this church so that we could minister to them, but I think God had other plans. After leading, we were so refreshed, and so ready for the rest of our trip. God used Grace City to prepare our hearts for the journey ahead of us. Please pray for this church as they carry the name of Jesus to Sin City. ‎#gracecityvegas ‎#roalt2013

What an incredible night. The ROALT crew and our friend Ruth decided to play music on the Vegas strip from 12am until 5am. We ended up making 102 bucks! Nothing like huddling up with 25 strangers in Las Vegas, arm in arm, singing Amazing Grace, and Wonderwall. Life is meant to be shared. After packing up our guitars, and stuffing the one dollar bills in our pockets, Ruth took us to a parking garage that overlooked the city to watch the sunrise. As I looked around, although the boys were overwhelmed with the weight of fatigue, they all had this smile. I knew exactly what it meant. This was our adventure.

Like the rest of the crew, Colin is one of my greatest friends. I believe he is the most talented dude I know. Let me just break it down for you... He is an incredible cook. Even when we have minimal ingredients, our team is still fed like kings. Colin is master of photographers. He captures emotions. He captures moments. He captures beauty. Colin speaks 4 languages. English, Mandarin, Malay, and Cantonese. He is a phenomenal musician. He writes captivating lyrics and melodies. He leads congregations with boldness, and he has a voice of an archangel; swoons the ladies. These are only a few of his great talents. If every one of them were to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would come of it.

I have been looking at pictures of this rock for two years. Now I am here. I have my own picture. We climbed to the top to gain a new prospective of the deep blue ocean. The setting sun cascaded across the ocean, leaving only a trace of yellow and orange to be swallowed up by the vast blue sky. The cold bitter wind nearly defeated us, but it was worth the fight. This is our favorite rock.

We led worship at parkway Community Church last night, in Fairfield, Ca! What an amazing time of worship. The congregation sang so loud, our own voices and instruments were nearly drowned out. It was beautiful. Also, this picture is of the family that hosted us. Not only was this the most incredible house I have ever slept in, but the family had the most genuine hearts. The love of Christ was so evident in their actions. A very big thank you to the Geiskof family. Oh.. And we loved the hot tub. Incredible. ‎#roalt2013

Well, our time at the great Big Sur is over. Sad, but we have more dreams to bring to life. We are being followed by our new Quebec friends. We met them at our campsite at Big Sur, and they are joining our journey for a few more days. We love Isabelle and Jean-Michel. As you read this, pray that Christ will shine through our lives, and that they will experience Jesus Christ through His seven traveling sons. Yosemite, HERE WE COME!!

I am honored to introduce you to the one and only Justin Smith. First off, for those who don't know the story, we nearly canceled the trip because of a lack of finances. When most of the guys had lost hope, Justin persisted. He never gave up. So thanks to his persistence, we are road trippin' it up; living our dream that was birthed over a year ago. Justin smiles no matter the situation. His optimism keeps us all going when we have been driving for 38 hours without a break. Justin also keeps us all in line. We like to call him daddy Smith. One of my favorite characteristics of Justin is his passion for unique hobbies. He is a master of wood burning, and wood carving. Anything that involves creativity and care, he is all over it. Justin is also a phenomenal guitarist. His dedication to music motivates us all! However, greater than all of these, is his passion for The Lord. He is a very focused follower of Christ. He wants to change the world, one life at a time. I am blessed to call him friend. You should meet him some day. It'd be good for ya.

Yesterday we enjoyed this paradise. Deer feeding off of the meadow..the warm sun complimenting the soft, chilled breeze.. Trout swimming in the crystal blue water. Yes. This was a place to remember. Thank you Father for the beauty of your creation. We praise you. ‎#roalt2013

Today is a sad day for the ROALT crew. Our two wonderful friends from Quebec are leaving us. We met them nearly a week ago at our campsite in Big Sur, and they have joined us on our adventures for nearly a week now. They both have added so much to our journey, and we will never forget them. Jean-Michel and Isabelle, we love you! Safe travels, friends. ‎#roalt2013

I can confidently say that there is only one Keller Hopkins like the one we've got. This confidence comes from knowing there must be some cosmic rule out there marking earth's boundary to only have "one Keller at a time." Keller is an independent man with a mission-minded life. A dare-devil; or as he would say, "a calculated risk-taker" - you may see him doing handstands on cliff-sides and things like that. Through the past few years he has felt the call to do several trips overseas to serve the Lord in Peru, Siberia, and other parts of the U.S. These trips sometimes last several months at a time, but he serves with a glad heart. The thing with Keller is that if he catches wind of your life-long dream and believes he can help you make it happen, he'll do everything he can to do so. You could call him a dream-fulfiller. He's a servant of Christ with his whole heart, and he just wants to bless others with his life. ‎#teamkeller

We have made it to Seattle! We spent the whole day at the market yesterday. It was one of the most unique places I have ever been. Loved it. Sadly, it was also the last day for both Colin and Keller. They had to fly back home to meet other commitments. The trip will not be the same without these two, but we will finish strong in their name! To get to know them a little better, check out ‎#meettheroaltcrew. More Seattle pics coming soon!

Seattle. I fell in love with this city. Somehow, I knew I would. The diversity of this place is like no other I have experienced. There are areas that resemble a typical big city that are flooded with stressed business men honking their horns, unique markets, and an assortment of smells that drift through the crowded streets. Then there are areas that feel quite inviting. Very genuine and loving, with local ice cream and coffee shops on every corner, wonderful record shops, and encouraging smiles to put any angry businessmen at ease. And finally, an hour in any direction leads you to mountains and beaches one could only dream of. We love Seattle. We also owe a BIG thank you to Zawadi and Erin for a wonderful dinner, jam time, and amazing company.. and to Kristina and Dustin for a great night of sleep, a wonderful meal, and great talks. We are now on our way to Glacier National Park, where dreams come true. We are currently listening to Love Bird, by @mparden. She is a talented friend from Ga. You need her music.

Well, it is down to us five. The adventure has been quite different with a smaller crew, but we journey on! We have just left Glacier and are entering Yellowstone National Park. We are prepared for some crazy memories. Bring it on Yellowstone!! ‎#roalt2013

The mountains towered over me like giants. I felt safe under their protection. White rivers made from glacier melt scurried along under their feet, and green meadows lavished with red and yellow flowers rested in the valleys of these giants. White mountain goats climbed their walls as we passed. While traveling the narrow dirt trail, we noticed that we were not alone. Several markings of elk, bear, deer and many other living creatures were imprinted in the wet earth below our feet. No sign of modern life in any direction. No trains. No planes. No smoke. Only the handiwork of the Creator. A wondrous paradise. ‎#roalt2013

“And if these mountains had eyes, they would wake to find a stranger in their fences, standing in admiration as a breathing red pours its tinge upon earth's shore. These mountains, which have seen untold sunrises, long to thunder praise but stand reverent, silent so that man's weak praise should be given God's attention.” ― Donald Miller

To capture the full identity of Tom in words is not the easiest task. Tom just graduated Liberty, and is preparing to minister at Oak Hills Church as Worship Coordinator for their youth group. Tom's passion for the Gospel and apologetics is inspiring. When most college kids are watching Family Guy, Tom is watching debates between world renown atheists and theists. Tom likes a good adventure. A typical Tom adventure could include biking, hiking, kite boarding, camping, or even a good book to get lost in. Tom seeks self-improvement daily, and is always developing his relationship with Christ. He is also a witty joker. Most of the time, he is not seeking attention. It's just... Tom. That's why he is my bud. Finally, Tom is a musical wizard. His piano, guitar, and mandolin skills are world class, and he has an ear that would make Chopin quit. All this in one man you say? Yes. And he is single.

Today, we set off to hike the "Seven Mile Hole" trail. It was about a twelve mile hike, which is normally just enough to make you really start craving some campfire hotdogs (with hot sauce and cheese of course)... However, it was labeled very strenuous for a reason, and we started four hours later than originally planned (4:15pm)... bad idea. As we hiked down the dangerously steep trail for a couple of hours, just before our knees surrendered, we finally reached the base of the mountain. This was a strange land. Smoke escaping the earths crust from the mouths of nearby geysers, and the air smelling of eggs from the sulfur they created. The streams were warm. The air was cold. The land was swarming with bear, wolves, bison, elk, and many other unfamiliar creatures. We loved it. After enjoying the area for a few minutes, a large thunderstorm approached us without warning. Lightning shot across the horizon, pulling a thunderous roar behind it. And then the rain came. I knew I had to protect the camera gear. We frantically ran to a nearby forest, picking up any branches we could gather along the way. In minutes we had this wonderful shelter to protect us from the threatening storm. We waited. The darkness began to overcome our much needed daylight. And we waited. The storm finally let up, giving us just enough courage to start the ascent. As we began, we quickly realized this was the hardest hike we had faced yet. The dangerously steep descent we had just overcame, turned into a climb like we had never experienced before. Our muscles screamed in agony. We told them to hush. We had to ignore the demands of our bodies. The struggle paid off once we reached our beautiful bus. None of us had ever been so excited about hotdogs with cheese and hot sauce before.

Well I guess it is my turn! Thanks to the roalt member Justin Smith for doing this write up for me. ‎ "Gosh, this guy, like the rest of the ROALT crew, is unique and has played a solid role in this trip. A description that does him justice is tricky, but I'll try to do my best! Tim is a worshiper on so many levels. He strives for excellence in whatever he decides to put his hands to, whether it be songwriting, music production, cello, guitar, or even planning a month-long, cross-country road trip in which nearly every hour, destination, and activity is accounted for in a typed itinerary. Tim has a child-like wonder of creation, and joyfully gives God the glory for being able to live and enjoy it. I mentioned songwriting. The songs that come from Tim's heart are deeply moving and loaded with intentional lyrics. A song doesn't get his stamp of approval without first going through a lot of prayer and careful thought. He wants others to know the God he serves, and firmly wants to use the talents given him to accomplish that task. A one-in 10 billion guy. Also, hot sauce. He puts hot sauce on everything. Everything. If you're ever hung up on a Christmas gift for this guy, it's Texas Pete. This completes the "Meet The Roalt Crew" series. You have met us all!

As I look across the valley, my thoughts are flooded. My mind does not understand what my eyes have fallen upon. I stand overwhelmed by reality. What purpose does beauty behold? Is it for our pleasure? Is it solely for His Glory? Or do these two concepts somehow work together? I believe the latter is true. When man is overwhelmed and overjoyed by the creation of the King of Glory...GOD is pleased. GOD is glorified.

The last hike. After one month, and nine hiking trails, it was strange to hike the last trail. But wow, what a way to go. We finished it off with the Cascade Canyon trail in the Grand Teton mountains. It was such a refreshing hike. Some of the guys agreed it was their favorite out of the nine.. Or at least a close second to The Narrows, in Zion. We saw FIVE moose. When does that happen on a hike?! The Teton mountains are beautiful, tall, ragged, and majestic. The rivers were running with water so beautiful and inviting, we couldn't resist a quick rinse. SO COLD! It was a perfect hike to end on. However, the trip is not over yet! We are very excited to finish strong at First Baptist Church of Rogers, Arkansas. We have a 24 hour drive, but our excitement increases with every mile. We are starting to miss people. A loving church body sounds quite nice right about now. But before AK...McDonalds, here we come! Prepping for a nice fattening breakfast. Mmm. No more grits and oatmeal for a good while.

After worshipping with FBCR, we went straight to the ‎#crystalbridges museum. Incredible. I could have stayed there all day. This is one of the most renown museums in the world, containing art from the 1500s-the modern era. Each work of art exhibits the greatness of God. The potential of the human mind and hands to create these beautiful works, vibrantly reflects the glory and grace of God. He is the source of creativity. For Him to share just a minuscule portion of that creativity is grace. Beautiful grace. If we as man can create such beauty, how much greater is the Author of life and creativity?

What a crazy adventure.

ROALT-Road Trip of a Lifetime. 7 guys. 25 states. 1 month. Countless memories. It feels so strange to be back.. sitting on my couch, drinking my warm cup of coffee, and listening to the familiar hum of the refrigerator. Although the trip lasted but one month, it seemed like ages. A journey.. painted on the deepest canvases of our minds; full of vibrant colors and twists. We are changed. We are challenged. God does not call us to a life of complacency or stagnancy. We cannot control the day of our birth, or the day of our natural death. The only factor left in the hands of man is the content between the two. What we do from day to day MUST matter. It MUST be intentional. This trip has taught us how easy it is to love. On our journey, we met countless strangers along the way (who quickly became life-long friends). Many of us realized how easy it is to build relationships. Why did it take so long for this discovery? Is it fear? Is it selfishness? The human race was formed with with a deep desire to be cared for. Yes, the love from one being to another temporarily fills this craving, but the love of Christ is the ONLY love that can reach the deepest aching of a human soul. The Author of life has entrusted his children with the calling to share this truth with man. To share the deep, perfect love of GOD to a crying world. A people who do not understand or feel their own tears falling from their dark, wondering eyes. Intentionality. It must be a lifestyle. It is so exciting to see what the seven Christ-followers will do with the many truths we have uncovered on this trip. I am humbled and thankful to call them brothers. The greatest of friends. "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." On a side note, America rocks. Unbelievable. Truly unbelievable. Go on a road trip! The End. -Timothy Riordan and the ROALT Crew.
